Katie Marks Colored Clay and Slip Workshop
Throw and Build welcome remarkable ceramic artist Katie Marks for a immersive two-day workshop. Color can be more than a surface treatment. In this workshop, students will explore ways to integrate color directly into clay through stained porcelain, colored slip, and simple nerikomi-inspired techniques. Through demonstrations, testing, and hands-on making, participants will learn how to use color as an essential part of form and design.
The workshop begins with a presentation exploring the possibilities of colored clay and slip. Katie will share examples from her own work as well as artists who have influenced her practice, including a discussion of Matthew Patton’s approach to gravity, movement, and drippy slip decoration.
By the end of the workshop, students will:
- Understand how to successfully color clay and slip using Mason Stains
- Learn proper mixing and testing methods
- Gain experience with drippy slip and colored clay decoration techniques
- Complete personalized color tests for future reference
- Leave with work-in-progress incorporating the techniques demonstrated during class
